The Game of Failures

This week’s devotional is from friend and Bibles & Baseball supporter, Tommy Mullins. Tommy is living his life in the trenches of both coaching baseball and living as a follower of Christ. Read and pray over his message; let it encourage and challenge you.

The Game of Failures

Growing up, baseball was one of my favorite sports. I found the game to be so rewarding, but also a lot of failure. As I became an adult and had sons of my own, I was blessed with the opportunity to coach each of them in the game. I still continue to coach my youngest. If you’ve played baseball for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard someone say that “baseball is a game of failure”. I know my sons as well as former and present players have heard me say it a lot. The game will beat you down more times than it will reward you. If you don’t believe me, just turn on the TV and watch a game of baseball. With all of those failures, for some reason, we still love the game.

In life, we encounter many failures. We may even get beat down along the way by life’s circumstances. In those times of failures, we don’t have to rely on ourselves to get back up or work harder to better our circumstances. As a matter of fact, we don’t have to do anything alone. We have a creator, a savior, and Holy Father that will walk beside us daily. He actually wants to walk beside us every day. Jesus died to pay for your sins and mine on the cross, and He offers His free gift of salvation. You can’t work to earn this gift. When you accept this free gift of salvation from Jesus, he only asks you to be obedient to Him and follow Him the rest of your life. If you are hearing this or reading this and don’t understand what salvation is or what it is all about, I encourage you to ask someone. Don’t waste another minute.

1 John 1:9(CSB) – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Isaiah 41:10(CSB) – “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.”

Psalm 37:23-24(CSB) – “A person’s steps are established by the Lord, and he takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord supports him with his hand.”

Let’s Pray

Father God, I thank you for the gift of salvation. I am thankful that your son lived a perfect life, but took on death so that we may have life. I pray, Father, that in all our failures we will look to you for guidance and for help. I pray, Father, that anyone that is reading this or listening to this and doesn’t have a personal relationship with you, that they will not waste another minute. We ask all these things in your precious and holy name, Amen

As you encounter failure whether on the baseball field or in life, just remember we have a loving, Heavenly Father that wants to embrace your failures with you, pick you up, or sometimes use your failures to guide you to a different path. Be open to those failures and allow God to work through those circumstances using you for His glory.

Blessings In Christ,
Tommy Mullins and the Bibles and Baseball Team
